CropLife Foundation 2011 Sustainability Tour - February

This January the CropLife Foundation launched the 2011 Sustainability Tour! Featuring Crop Protection Research Institute Director Leonard Gianessi, the Sustainability Tour is the launch of CLF's newest presentation.

EPA Office of Pesticide Programs
Washington, DC

On February 23rd, Leonard conducted a Training Seminar on Sustainability for USEPA's Office of Pesticide Programs at their Potomac Yard, Crystal City offices. Leonard presented his new Talk on Sustainability and the Importance of Herbicides. The presentation was organized by Steve Jarboe and LaVerne Dobbins of BEAD. About 40 OPP staffers attended the seminar, including former CLA staff member Kristin Rury. Leonard was encouraged to expand the talk to include more of the positive steps that industry and EPA have taken to improve and assure safety. Leonard has a standing invitation to return with a new talk anytime.

TPSA Conference
San Antonio, TX

On Valentine's Day, Leonard presented his Talk on Sustainable Agriculture and the Importance of Herbicides at the 11th Annual Conference of The Pesticide Stewardship Alliance (TPSA) in San Antonio. The 100+ attendees included industry personnel, university staff, EPA and state regulators.

CropWorld North America 2011 Conference
Charlotte, NC

Leonard served as a panelist at Crop World's North America 2011 Conference in Charlotte, NC on February 8th. Leonard and fellow panelists, Lorne Hepworth (CropLife Canada), and Friedheim Schmider (ECPA) along with the moderator Tom Hunt (Crop Protection Association of NC) discussed ongoing communications and outreach efforts to present the benefits of crop protection and biotech products to the public, policymakers and regulators. Leonard described the ongoing CLF 2011 Sustainability Tour particularly the opportunities to present seminars for college students.

USDA Agricultural Research Service
Beltsville, MD

On February 3, Leonard presented the Talk on Sustaining Modern Farming in the US: the Importance of Herbicides for a USDA/ARS audience in Beltsville Maryland. The presentation was at the invitation of John Teasdale, Research Leader for ARS's Sustainable Agricultural Systems Lab. Dr Teasdale led a spirited discussion following Leonard's presentation. During this Dr Teasdale remarked that it was refreshing having us there because usually they typically only receive presentations on organic agriculture and not conventional.

Annual Meeting of the National
Council of Agricultural Employers
Washington, DC

On February 1, Leonard made the third stop of  CropLife Foundation's 2011 Sustainability Tour when he spoke in DC at The Annual Meeting of the National Council of Agricultural Employers. The meeting was chaired by NCAE's Executive Vice President Frank Gasparini, a long-time former RISE staff member.
