CropLife Foundation 2011 Sustainability Tour

This January the CropLife Foundation launched the 2011 Sustainability Tour! Featuring Crop Protection Research Institute Director Leonard Gianessi, the Sustainability Tour is the launch of CLF's newest presentation.

This presentation, entitled Sustainability of Modern Farming in the US: The Importance of Herbicides, traces the role of farming through the history of the United States. Beginning in the 1800s and looking to the future, this presentation demonstrates how farming has evolved over the past two centuries. It shows the recent advances that have enabled the U.S. to develop a system of agriculture that will support a burgeoning population in the next century.

The presentation is currently scheduled at universities, conferences, and company offices across the country and throughout the year. If you're wondering what people are saying about the 2011 Sustainability Tour, be sure to check out our 1st testimonial below!

AGMaster's Conference
Champaign, IL

On December 5, Leonard was the lead speaker at the 3rd Annual AGMasters Conference at the University of Illinois in Champaign, IL. Leonard addressed an audience of 160 attendees including chemical and fertilizer dealers, certified crop advisors, large scale corn and soybean farmers and UI crop specialists. The AGMasters Conference kicks off a stream of conferences and meetings across Illinois over the next few months to provide updates on last season and potential concerns for the coming year. The major theme was managing weed resistance to herbicides. Leonard was asked by Conference co-chair Mike Gray to present a Talk on the Irreplaceability of Herbicides, which emphasized how important herbicides are and set the stage for the following speakers with their concerns for managing resistance. The AGMasters Conference is sponsored by the Illinois Fertilizer and Chemical Association, Monsanto, Dow AgroSciences, Bayer CropScience and Dupont.

ALEC States and Nation Policy Summit
Phoenix, AZ

On December 2, Leonard joined with CLA's Jeff Case in Phoenix, AZ at the American Legislative Exchange Council's (ALEC) States and Nation Policy Summit. LPG presented his Talk on the Importance of Herbicides in Sustainable Crop Production. Leonard's presentation followed Todd Myers of the Washington Policy Center who described Eco-Fads — How the Rise of Trendy Environmentalism is Harming the Environment — which was a perfect introduction to Leonard's explanation of how herbicides were critical for sustainable agriculture and that doing without them (trendy environmentalism) would lead to environmental degradation. Leonard's presentation was part of the Meeting of the ALEC Task Force on Energy, Environment and Agriculture, of which Jeff Case is a member.

The Q/A period was lively with many questions and offers to help with arranging presentations for local and college audiences. Nichino America President Jeff Johnson told the group how highly he thought of CLA's Modern Agriculture campaign.

SCPA's 2011 State Issues Summit
Charleston, SC

On October 26th, Leonard presented his talk on Sustainable Agriculture and the Importance of Herbicides at SCPA's 2011 State Issues Summit in Charleston, SC. Leonard fielded many questions about the reactions that he receives after making the presentation to university and other primarily non-ag audiences. Leonard noted that he had greatly benefitted from several SCPA State Affairs members who were in the audience and who had helped set up speaking events for him: Tom Hunt of CPANC and Elisha Modisett Kemp from DOW. Also in the audience were SCPA's Bucky Kennedy and Leigha Cauthen of the AL Agribusiness Council who have been instrumental in arranging for Leonard to speak at an upcoming Agricultural Symposium in Alabama.

The day before, Leonard visited USDA's Vegetable Laboratory in Charleston where his long-time friend Alvin Simmons had scheduled Leonard's presentation on Sustainable Agriculture. About 30 USDA and Clemson scientists attended the presentation. A highlight for Leonard was a tour of the research areas at the Lab where he saw many sweet potato variety trials and numerous herbicide efficacy trials for vegetable crops.
